Format and validate JSON instantly — no button to press
drop the json is a free, browser-based JSON formatter and validator. Paste or type JSON into the left pane and it is beautified, validated, and shown as a foldable tree on the right the moment you stop typing. Nothing is uploaded — every byte is parsed locally in your browser, so even private or large payloads never leave your machine.
What is JSON?
JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight, text-based format for storing and exchanging structured data. It has become the default language of web APIs, configuration files, log lines, and database documents because it is both easy for humans to read and trivial for machines to parse. A JSON document is built from a handful of value types:
- Objects — unordered key/value pairs wrapped in curly braces, e.g.
{"name": "Ada"}. - Arrays — ordered lists wrapped in square brackets, e.g.
[1, 2, 3]. - Strings — text in double quotes, e.g.
"hello". - Numbers — integers or floats, e.g.
42or3.14. - Booleans —
trueorfalse. - null — an explicit empty value.
Because JSON is so compact, it is usually shipped over the wire as a single dense line with no spaces. That is efficient for computers but painful for people to read or debug — which is exactly the gap a formatter fills.
How to use this formatter
- Paste your JSON into the input pane on the left. The text is colored as you type so keys, strings, numbers, and keywords are easy to scan.
- Read the result on the right. Valid JSON is pretty-printed into an indented, collapsible tree; click the ▾ arrows to fold or expand any object or array.
- Pick an indent — 2 spaces, 4 spaces, tabs, or Minify to collapse everything back to one line.
- Sort keys alphabetically with the checkbox to make two documents easy to diff.
- Copy the formatted output to your clipboard with one click.
Your input, indent choice, sort setting, and split position are saved in your browser, so the page picks up exactly where you left off after a refresh.
Features
- Automatic formatting — no "Format" button; output updates live as you edit.
- Built-in validation — the status bar tells you instantly whether the JSON is valid and reports the exact position of the first error.
- Forgiving parser — common mistakes such as single quotes, unquoted keys,
trailing commas, and
//or/* */comments are repaired and converted into clean, standard JSON. - Collapsible tree view — fold large objects and arrays to focus on the part you care about; each collapsed node shows how many keys or items it hides.
- Minify and beautify — switch between human-readable and compact output in one click.
- Sort keys — normalize key order to compare or version JSON reliably.
- 100% private — all parsing happens client-side; no data is sent to a server.
Why format JSON?
Minified JSON saves bandwidth, but it is nearly impossible to debug by eye. Formatting adds consistent indentation and line breaks so the structure becomes visible at a glance: you can see where an object opens and closes, spot a missing comma, and trace nesting without counting brackets. A validator on top of that catches the syntax errors that break API requests and config loads before they reach production.
Frequently asked questions
Is my JSON data sent anywhere?
No. The formatter runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your JSON is never uploaded, logged, or stored on any server.
Can it handle large files?
Yes. Because everything is processed locally, large documents format quickly without an upload step. Very large inputs depend on your device's available memory.
What is the difference between formatting (beautifying) and minifying?
Beautifying adds indentation and line breaks to make JSON readable. Minifying strips all optional whitespace to make the payload as small as possible for transport. Choose Minify in the indent menu to switch.
My JSON has single quotes and trailing commas — will it still work?
Yes. When strict parsing fails, the lenient parser steps in and repairs common issues (single quotes, unquoted keys, trailing commas, comments, hex numbers) and outputs valid, standard JSON.
Does it cost anything?
No. The tool is completely free to use, with no sign-up required.
